In the wake of the thousands of anti-Asian hate incidents that have occurred since the 2020 outbreak of COVID-19, we at Westfield State University stand in full support of our Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) colleagues and friends here and across the country. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those hurt—physically and/or emotionally—or killed in the many senseless brutal incidents of physical violence and racism that have permeated globally along with the virus.
In support of the values inspired by Westfield State’s founding father Horace Mann, we at the University strive to be sensitive and welcoming to everyone. We are committed to providing creative ways for students, staff, and faculty to learn from one another, engage deeply, develop understanding across differences, and grow.
Asians comprise approximately 5.6 percent of the American population, and are often overlooked, marginalized, or silenced in the larger landscape of the American story. As recent attacks tragically demonstrate, Asians are often treated with suspicion and even overt hostility.
Please join me in supporting our students, faculty, staff of Asian descent, and all other marginalized populations who need it the most.
